The artist, interested in the outside of painting
A prolific self-taught artist with career spanning six decades. A painter, sculptor, and installation artist, who developed a radical approach to geometric abstraction. A founding member of GRAV, an experimental artist’s collaborative, that emerged in France in the early 1960s. The list of accolades goes on, but the thing you should know about François Morellet right this moment, is that Hauser & Wirth is mounting their inaugural exhibition with the artist. Titled “In-Coherent”, the exhibition will offer a glimpse of Morellet’s multi-facetted practice from 1953, when the artist shifted from figurative work to abstraction, inspired by his trip to Brazil, to 2013. The exhibition goes on view on January 26th through April 7th, and you can expect some rarely seen key abstract geometric paintings, space installations and several neon works.
