In a monumental achievement, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) has not only reached but exceeded its ambitious fundraising goal of $750 million for the Building LACMA campaign. Michael Govan, the CEO and Wallis Annenberg Director of LACMA, made the announcement, highlighting the significant progress in funding the construction of the David Geffen Galleries. These galleries are slated to become the museum's new home, showcasing its rich and diverse collections on a global scale.
The campaign, now over 65% complete, has been instrumental in the creation of the David Geffen Galleries, a structure that spans Wilshire Boulevard. This project is a testament to a historic public-private partnership involving key contributors, including the County of Los Angeles, philanthropist David Geffen, Elaine Wynn (co-chair of LACMA's board of trustees), the W.M. Keck Foundation, Steve Tisch (LACMA trustee), and a host of donors from various sectors.
A notable highlight in this journey was the substantial contribution from Steve Tisch, a trustee and major donor to LACMA, whose generosity played a pivotal role in surpassing the $750 million goal. Importantly, the David Geffen Galleries, while owned by the County of Los Angeles, is a groundbreaking collaboration, with 80% of its funding derived from private donations and the remaining 20% from the County.
This accomplishment not only marks a financial milestone for LACMA but also sets the stage for a cultural and artistic legacy that will be housed within the walls of the David Geffen Galleries. As this architectural marvel takes shape, it symbolizes the power of collaboration and the unwavering commitment of individuals and communities to the preservation and celebration of art.
