History leaps off the pages and into the present at the Smithsonian American Art Museum with the debut of the Temple of Invention Augmented Reality (AR) Experience. Nestled within the walls of a building steeped in historical significance, this immersive journey invites visitors to step back in time and witness pivotal moments that shaped America's innovation landscape.

Before it became a sanctuary for art, the iconic structure served as the United States' patent office—a beacon of ingenuity where thousands of patent models were displayed, heralding a new era of creativity and progress. Dubbed a "temple of invention," it was a hub of ideas and exploration, fostering an environment ripe for innovation and change.

"The Smithsonian American Art Museum is thrilled to introduce the latest in AR technology, offering visitors a fresh perspective on history within our Luce Foundation Center," remarked Jane Carpenter-Rock, Deputy Director for Museum Content and Outreach. "This innovative approach to audience engagement aligns seamlessly with our mission to pilot new programs and initiatives, particularly within the context of our historical building—a former patent office that played a pivotal role in America's quest for innovation."

Produced by Smartify and generously supported by AT&T, the AR experience transports visitors through time, introducing them to a captivating cast of characters who once graced the halls of the building. From inventors to soldiers, poets to artists, and architects to historical figures like Clara Barton and President Abraham Lincoln, each encounter offers a glimpse into the vibrant tapestry of American history.

Participants will relive defining moments, from Clara Barton's compassionate care for wounded Civil War soldiers to the jubilant festivities of President Lincoln's second inaugural ball. They'll also bear witness to the harrowing devastation of a catastrophic fire in 1877 that consumed thousands of patent models, underscoring the fragility of historical artifacts and the resilience of human ingenuity.

Designed with families and elementary school-age children in mind, the Temple of Invention Augmented Reality Experience promises an unforgettable journey through time and space. Available from April 18 to May 16, between noon and 5 p.m. on selected days, the experience is free of charge. Registration is encouraged, though walk-ins are welcome on a limited, first-come, first-served basis.

Embark on a voyage of discovery, where the past meets the present and imagination knows no bounds. Join us at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and witness history come to life in ways you've never imagined.
