The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) has officially announced that Christophe Cherix will take on the prestigious role of the David Rockefeller Director in September 2025, succeeding the long-serving Glenn D. Lowry. This decision follows an intensive six-month international search and was unanimously approved by the Board.
Cherix brings a wealth of experience and a deep-rooted history with MoMA, having joined the museum in 2007. Since 2013, he has served as The Robert Lehman Foundation Chief Curator of Drawings and Prints, a position he earned following MoMA’s strategic merging of its Prints and Illustrated Books and Drawings departments.
Cherix’s curatorial impact is undeniable. His exhibitions have ranged from ED RUSCHA / NOW THEN (2024) to Yoko Ono: One Woman Show, 1960–1971 (2015), and he’s played a crucial role in bringing influential collections into the museum’s fold. These include the Berman, Daled, Siegelaub, Fluxus, and Art & Project/Depot VBVR collections—vital additions that have shaped MoMA’s contemporary identity.
Before MoMA, Cherix worked at the Musée d’art et d’histoire in Geneva, and his international background, combined with a scholarly foundation from the University of Geneva, reflects the global perspective he brings to modern art curation. He is also a 2010 Fellow of the Center for Curatorial Leadership.
As MoMA enters this exciting new chapter, Cherix’s visionary leadership promises to continue pushing boundaries, preserving legacy, and redefining the future of modern art.
