The First Self-Portrayal of Pregnancy
The Museum of Modern Art and Neue Galerie New York acquire the only self-portrait of Paula Modersohn-Becker in the U.S.
Paula Modersohn-Becker, a pioneering figure of the 20th-century German avant-garde, is believed to be the first women to paint herself while pregnant. Despite her early death, the artist left behind more than 700 paintings and some 1,000 works on paper. One of the paintings, Self-Portrait with Two Flowers in Her Raised Left Hand(1907) has recently found a new home, entering MoMA’s collection.
