Gareth Pugh‘s New Theatrical Challenge

When the classic work gets a sci-fi reinterpretation

The Austrian theater director Stephan Mueller asked Turner-Prize-nominated artist Goshka Macuga to collaborate on a reinterpretation of the classic opera Antigona, which opened at the Documenta Art Fair. When the new for our digital times includes singers on Segways and opens with a parody of the Star Wars scroll text, it requires one of a kind costumes.

Gareth Pugh, who has been designing for Lady Gaga, Roisin Murphy, and Beyonce, as well as for the ballet Carbon Life and opera Eliogablo, took on this theatrical challenge. In keeping with the opera theme, he not only designed costumes, but presented a pioneering digital experience, presenting the pieces in a 360-degree digital format. The project, born from the artist’s aspiration to break from 2-D design approach, guides users through four acts, responding to the stage production. The pieces are inspired by Pugh’s Spring 2012 exoskeletons looks, adapted for the opera.
