Netflix's Sustainability Progress: Three Years In
©netflix
Since 2021, Netflix has been dedicated to achieving two near-term climate targets: halving carbon emissions by 2030 and, starting in 2022, matching remaining emissions by investing in natural climate solutions. Now, three years into this initiative, Netflix is on track to meet both of these ambitious goals.
To continue progressing towards these targets, Netflix focuses on the main sources of its emissions, which stem primarily from operations and the value chain. The company employs a framework known as "OED" — first, optimizing energy use; second, electrifying energy sources; and finally, decarbonizing what remains.
In the past year, Netflix made significant strides by reducing its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 50% compared to 2022. Due to decreased production work in 2023, the majority of emissions originated from corporate operations, followed by film and series productions, and a small fraction from streaming. Here is a closer look at the progress so far:
**Reducing Emissions Across Offices and Studios**
Netflix continually collaborates with utilities and landlords to identify energy efficiency improvements across its offices and studios. Consistent with previous years, the company continues to match its global operations with 100% renewable electricity and adopt renewable fuels.
In 2023, Netflix began a major expansion project at its studio campus in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This project includes several sustainable investments aimed at lowering operating costs, enhancing the production experience, and reducing the carbon footprint. Key initiatives include installing geothermal heating and cooling systems, building on-site solar and battery storage systems, and investing in electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure with fast chargers to quickly power the electric vehicles used in productions.
These efforts reflect Netflix’s commitment to sustainability and its ongoing work to minimize its environmental impact. By focusing on optimizing, electrifying, and decarbonizing its energy use, Netflix continues to lead by example in the entertainment industry’s transition to a more sustainable future.
