Another Dimension of Sundance Film Festival

Some people are waiting for the Oscar announcements, following the predictions and bets religiously, others indulge in the off-the mainstream road treats. Sundance Film Festival has been the main event in the dedicated cinephiles’ calendar and it just announced the lineups for 2017.

Yes, it’s here, the 66 films selected for the U.S Competition, World Competition and NEXT. They will be screened during a ten days extravaganza of provocative, agenda-setting independent films in Salt Lake City, starting January 19th. Climate change and environmental concerns have been long important topics to Sundance filmmakers and to the event’s founder Robert Redford, but this year Sundance launched “New Climate”, a whole platform for this critical topic.

Sundance’s competition, where last year’s winner “The Birth of a Nation” and films like “Whiplash” were first seen, can be boundary pushing. But this year, it seems that “provocative’ is the keyword, carried out by a choir of new voices, and an array of never-before-seen perspectives. Lineup’s movies “Step”, “Yellow Birds” and “Whose Streets” already caught the media attention. In addition, the most intense segment of the selection process coincided this year with the very moment Americans were focused on the election, and contrary to what was going on in the outside world, this year’s movie selection offers a rather personal, intimate dimension, unveiling the really human side in the whole story of who we are.
