Out of Venice : Who Won This Year

Slow cinema, fashion and award season hits—the film festival in Venice has wrapped up its 73rd edition, not without surprises.

The Philippines has been giving plenty of themes for media lately, and Venice film festival just added another one. <The Woman Who Left> , a drama by Filipino director Lav Diaz has one the festival's top prize, the Golden Lion for best film. The director said the film was a testimony to the struggle of the Phillippines after centuries of colonial rule. Will the win of a four-hours length movie mark the coming of slow cinema, following the bursting trend of slow TV? We’ll have to wait to see for that one, but this edition of Venice was certainly one of the strongest in recent years, reinforcing the festival’s status as a prime Oscar launching pad.

For one thing, the critics predict that the next awards season will belong to Natalie Portman, who gave a nuanced performance in <Jackie> , a movie that won the best screenplay nod. Tom Ford didn't go back home barehanded: his romantic noir <Nocturnal Animals> took the fest's Jury Grand Prize. Amat Escalante and veteran Russian author Andrei Konchalovsky both split an unresolvable tie, receiving the Silver lion in best director nomination. The role in musical <La La Land> brought Emma Stone the best actress prize and best actor prize went to Argentinian actor Oscar Martinez for his performance in <The Distinguished Citizen>, a comedy about art, fame, and petty provincial jealousy.
