Recording Academy®, UN Human Rights, and Oxford University Unite for Right Here, Right Now Global Climate Alliance in NYC
NEW YORK (SEPT. 26, 2024) – On September 24, the Recording Academy® and Right Here, Right Now Global Climate Alliance, in partnership with United Nations Human Rights and the University of Oxford, gathered in New York City to promote the 2025 Right Here, Right Now Global Climate Summit. This summit aims to address climate justice and rights-based climate action worldwide. Held during the 79th United Nations General Assembly Week, the event underscored the intersection of climate change, human rights, and culture. These organizations collaborated to raise global awareness, advocate for climate action, and emphasize the importance of human rights in climate discussions.
“We are incredibly proud of our partnership with Right Here, Right Now and honored to host such an amazing night of music at our Recording Academy New York townhouse,” said Harvey Mason Jr., CEO of the Recording Academy. “As we continue to expand our global efforts, I’m excited to showcase how music’s power can raise awareness and promote change on human rights issues worldwide.”
This event follows the Recording Academy’s recent announcement of expanding support for music creators in Africa and the Middle East. The Academy is building a framework to protect artists and promote creative development globally, recognizing that musicians can be powerful voices for justice. This marks the second time the Academy has hosted an event during the United Nations General Assembly alongside UN Human Rights and the Right Here, Right Now Global Climate Alliance. The private industry event at the Recording Academy’s New York townhouse featured performances by international recording artists Khatia Buniatishvili, Felukah, and Fally Ipupa.
“The climate crisis is a human rights crisis. It affects housing, food, water, health, and more, impacting the rights of millions around the globe. As a Global Partner of the Right Here, Right Now Global Climate Alliance, UN Human Rights is grateful to the Recording Academy and Oxford University for their commitment to advancing human rights solutions to minimize the suffering caused by the climate crisis,” said Volker Türk, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Professor Irene Tracey, Vice Chancellor of the University of Oxford, stated, “With our world-leading expertise in climate research and teaching, the University of Oxford is proud to be the Academic Partner for the Right Here, Right Now Global Climate Alliance. We appreciate the Recording Academy’s efforts to spotlight the connection between human rights and climate change. We look forward to joining researchers, students, and the music community in June 2025 to find solutions to one of the most pressing issues of our time – climate change.”
