Fountain, the symbol of conceptual art revolution turns 100 this year, museums worldwide celebrate the best way they know - with some free art. 

The art world has been challenged and disrupted throughout the history, but if standing in the contemporary museum you can’t help but wonder when did the U-turn happen, mark it - it’s the spring of 1917. When Marcel Duchamp, the father of conceptual art, purchased a ‘readymade’ urinal, turned it upside down, and signed with a fictitious name ‘R. Mutt’, the course of art has been changed.

Duchamp challenged viewers with the assertion that an idea can be as significant as an artist’s craftwork itself, expanding the notions of what’s ugly and beautiful in art. Fountain was not about an object, but about the statement, a spectacle that agitated and upset people, raising a number of questions about the nature of art. 

Last Sunday, some institutions of modern and contemporary art around the world have scheduled a free entry from 3 to 4 p.m. with the password “Richard Mutt”, including Centre Pompidou in Paris, Tate Modern in London, The National Museum of Modern Art in Kyoto and many more.
