BorntoRunway | Marilove Diary | Italian Designer Caterina Gatta, Whose Passion Becomes Worn

1.jpg

Art that becomes worn is: searched-tested-created-worn by Caterina Gatta!

Caterina finds pieces of fabric in the past, recombines them, and then they become key to her own creativity.

There were signs of the starting point of her creative path, but then became significantly more personal. No more art pieces worn, the path now continues with fabrics she designed for true collections signed by herself.

The treasure to discover the talent of the great designers from the past through the fabrics were forgotten in drawers, cupboards or deposits, and then becomes something special to take pride in.

Caterina has an eye that sees the future of the past.

Caterina Gatta’s Story

My path was born from a small piece of fabric formed on selvedge of the princess designer Irene Modern Facilities. For those who studied fashion (five-year degree in Fashion and Costume at La Sapienza University of Rome and various courses at Saint Martins in Fashion Styling), as in my case, it was like finding a 5 carat diamond. I still remember how it was wrapped in tissue paper browned from time, but the fabric already lost its beauty and luster. I decided that perhaps, looking for better, I would find something better in my vintage hunt. Gradually, I was able to get around Italy, but also London and Paris, and more than 20 famous designers (Gianni Versace, Mila Schon, Yves Saint Laurent, Ungaro, Valentino, Ken Scott and many more), it was in inventories of old pieces of fabrics (almost all thirsty). In the beginning I would pick up small pieces of only 20 cm for an archive. But even that was not enough after a while and I decided to try to do some design for myself to wear during fashion week. At the time I was an assistant to a fashion journalist and from there all parties…

My internship as a shop assistant while making vintage clothing definitely helped me become familiar with the old original and beautiful.

My first real opportunity was through participating in The Vogue Talents Corner organized by Vogue Italia in Milan…

It was only after the event that my personal passion became serious work.
