Simone Leigh’s practice confronts and examines assumptions about the female body, race, beauty, and community. The 2018 Hugo Boss Prize winner now offers her work to drive change and uplift for black people. Leigh created a bronze sculpture in limited edition of 25 pieces, to raise 625 thousand dollars for the online racial justice organization Color of Change, the largest in the country. The silhouette of 20 inch tall sculpture titled “Sentinel IV” is inspired by an object used in fertility rituals, and is derived from a large-scale “parent” sculpture currently on display at David Kordansky Gallery in Los Angeles.
