Lizzie Siddall’s legacy reimagined
Lizzie Siddall, perhaps the most adulated muse and model for the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, is remembered in a new way. Artist Piotr Uklański, inspired by the Neo-Gothic architecture of Belmont Chapel, created a series of powerful portraits of Lizzie and other famous “stunners”. On view from July 3rd through Labor Day, Piotr Uklański: Suicide Stunners’ Séance is organized by Art&Newport in collaboration with the Island Cemetery Company and the Belmont Chapel Foundation. Uklański imagines the act of painting in this haunted context as an occult séance in which he hopes not only to conjure the models’ likenesses, but also to resuscitate their complex individual histories from the fate of one-dimensional “muse-ness.”
