A journey into the Dark Palette
Pace Gallery in New York is proudly presenting the exhibition of Mark Rothko, one of the most important artists of 20th century. And there is something to be proud of: not only the gallery represents artist’s work since 1978, this tenth solo exhibition turns out to be a rather intimate one. Arne Glimcher, the founder of Pace Gallery became friends with Rothko in the mid 60s, which adds a rather personal hue to the exhibition. But, perhaps, the meaning of Rothko: Dark Palette is unveiled on a deeper level in the 22 selected paintings themselves. The exhibition reveals the development of artist’s expressive use of color reflecting his personal beliefs. On several occasions, Rothko made it clear, how he felt: for him, tragedy was the only theme noble enough for art.
This underlying theme is revealed slowly throughout the exhibition, allowing the visitors to dive into the passion, romance and eroticism expressed in darker values of burgundy, charcoal, gray and black colors. The selected works represent an expressive period of Rothko’s experimentation with color from 1955 through the 1960s. This exhibition is a several years endeavor, which coordinated loans from various museum collections. It brings an uninterrupted experience of a journey through the dark colors of Rothko.
