Family secrets: Gagosian Gallery presents a new Picasso exhibition
Until December 17th, Gagosian Gallery at Madison Avenue in New York will be home to an unprecedented exhibition. A selection from the collection of Maya Ruiz-Picasso, the painter’s daughter, includes an array of works which provide a personal view of the family history. Picassos the audience had a rear chance to see, and some of the works has never been shown to the public in the US before.
Maya Ruiz-Picasso, the second of the artist’s four children, has been devoting her time and energy to highlighting Picasso’s legacy. While over the years, she has donated works to leading arts institutions, she kept some of the dearest ones close to the heart, assembling a sort of intimate family album.
Gagosian Gallery exhibits this unique collection of works, selected by Maya’s daughter, French art historian and curator Diana Widmaier-Picasso. The exhibition covers the period between 1931 and 1971 showing paintings, drawings, sculptures and ceramics. It is the rare chance to “look behind the scenes” without invading the privacy and, perhaps, reimagining for yourself a great painter and complex family connections he had left.
