Lorna Simpson’s first solo exhibition with Hauser & Wirth in New York will debut on April 25th.

In 1985, when Lorna Simpson just emerged from the graduate program, she was already considered a pioneer of conceptual photography. For more than 30 years, her groundbreaking practice centered on complex intersections of nature of representation, identity, gender, race, and history.

In Darkening, the artist tries her hand with a new medium— painting, at the same time returning and developing the artistic message, that has entangled viewers in a web of meaning. On view from April 25th through July 26th, the artist’s solo will present new large-scale paintings, alongside recent photographic collages and sculpture.
