Jannis Kounellis @ Musée de la Monnaie in Paris

A monumental exhibition of the Italian post-war Arte Povera artist Jannis Kounellis is showing at the Musee de la Monnaie in Paris until 30 April. Iron, wood, coal, fire, jute fabric, and animals dead or alive are this artist's basic vocabulary. He rejects all traditional art mediums.

Kounellis works in the dimensions of the human figure, inspired by Le Corbusier's architectural concept of the 'Modulor', in which the human body becomes the reference point. Fire is his favourite element, coal and iron his favourite materials, as this wide ranging exhibition demonstrates.

The artworks are in a dialogue with the manufacturing process of the Paris Mint which is his inspiration. One monumental thought-provoking creation follows another through the mint's gilded 19th century rooms, in a striking juxtaposition of materials.

For Kounellis the works speak to the spectator, slowly unfolding along a poetic journey.

Each visitor is left to find his or her own personal meaning.

Jannis Kounellis
