MoMA is Asking Fashion Questions
This fall The Museum of Modern Art will investigate fashion through 111 garments and accessories that have had a profound effect on the world over the last century.
Items: Is Fashion Modern? is the second exhibition, in which MoMA addresses this field of design, that exists within a complex system of politics, economics, style, technology, and culture. On view from October 1st through January 28th, 2018, the exhibition examines this system through 111 garments, that will fill the entire sixth floor of the Museum.
The title echoes the question that architect and curator Bernard Rudofsky raised with his 1944 MoMA exhibition dedicated to fashion. This fall’s exhibition urges to consider the ways in which today, more than half a century later, we design, manufacture, market, wear and dispose of clothes.
Items, organized by Paola Antonelli and Michelle Millar Fisher, in a way, present the fashion history of the last century, through ‘lens’ of 111 items. Paired with contextual materials—images and videos—the exhibition traces each item’s history and origins through to its archetypal form.
