Two Debuts in New Museum

This summer season New York’s only museum exclusively devoted to contemporary art will bring the first US exhibition of John Akomfrah and NY’s first survey of Thomas Bayrle.

On view from June 20th through September 2nd, John Akomfrah: Signs of Empire is the first survey exhibition in the U.S. of the prominent British artist. Since the early 1980s, Akomfrah put the contemporary British society in the new light through his works that reflected on the culture of the black diaspora. The artist, film director, and writer started his career as part of Black Audio Film Collective, and gradually expanded his focus beyond Britain to wider historical context of colonialism legacy. In the past several years, his multichannel video works have evolved into ambitious, large-scale installations shown in museums around the world.

Another retrospective to await this summer season in the New Museum is an exhibition of the works of Thomas Bayrle, an important German artist, who has received belated recognition for his influential works. The exhibition, on view at the same time as John Akomfrah retrospective, will present 115 works, including paintings, sculptures, drawings, wallpapers and prints, early computer-based art, videos, and 16mm films.
