Snaidero/Milano Furniture Fair
The Salone del Mobile di Milano (Milan Furniture Fair) opens this April. The first fair since Roberto Snaidero took over as president in late 2014, it looks set to continue the trend of the previous few years, getting more visitors from more countries than ever before – a tall order considering last year’s record of over 270,000 people from 160 different places.
Cassina, the Italian furniture company, will once again be taking over several of the 260,000 booths to display their collection “Le Corbusier 50, stories of encounters that have revolutionised design”, paying tribute to the Franco-Swiss architect and designer. The collection, by Spanish designer Jaime Hayón, is made from a single material – wood – and a single finish, creating an interesting challenge for the designer. A documentary, made in collaboration with SkyArtsHD, will also be showed in an adjacent booth with the same title. Cassina has owned the rights to the products designed by Le Corbusier since 1964, along with Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand.
But Snaidero is more than capable of making this year’s show eclipse all the previous ones, which go as far back as 1961. Born in Udine in and with a degree in Economics and Commerce, he has been on the board of directors and president of some of Italian’s best known furniture companies, including Abaco Spa andFederlegno Arredo. In an exclusive interview with the Maker he discussed the opening of the fair, noting there is now “a huge presence of Chinese visitors that have been attending, and this number has been a significant number, showing signs of a good relationship between Italy and China”. He went on say “the Chinese consumer has been considering the Italian product, looking for the Made in Italy, its quality, design and avant-garde”. But of course it is not just China; the whole world looks to Italy as the forerunners of style, a country who has for centuries created the beautiful and the novel.
The Furniture Fair will also be featuring exhibits from Fiera, Giulio Cappellini, Istituto Marangoni, Damiani and Jasper Morrison.
