Honoring Our Oceans 《

Artists and writers have long been fascinated by the strength and spirit of the Earth’s oceans, mixing and contributing to its mystique with their fantasies perceptions while striving to remain aware of its paradoxical fragility. Recently, Yi Zhou Studio has released a video piece inspired by the work of UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) with their Marine World Heritage Program. ‘Freedom’, as a representation of Yi Zhou’s own perception of the marine world, features her own voiceover work, and brings to the screen the depth of the seas and depictions of the wealth of living creatures therein. The program, which aims to explore, protect and conserve some of the most extraordinary marine sites in the world, has named 47 marine locations around the world as natural heritage sites, and thus under protection. The protection of marine sites on UNESCO’s World Heritage List is one of the causes promoted by The Maker, Yi Zhou Studio’s online magazine. For The Maker, oceanic creatures’ disappearance is an irreversible loss to humanity, and their protection is a huge responsibility of us all.
