A Whole Range of Emotions

In Focus: Expressions exhibitions is set to open in Getty Museum on May 22nd.

What is it, that makes a portraiture enigmatic, captivating the audiences gaze? What makes a face unforgettable? Often, it’s not the beauty, which is in the eye of the beholder, and differs from culture to culture, it’s the facial expression. This season, Getty Museum dedicates an entire exhibition to this topic, showcasing 45 works drawn from the Museum’s permanent collection. 

On view from May 22nd through October 7th, the exhibition is a tribute to human face and emotions, captured in art. In Focus expires with the most inverse and ubiquitous expression, the smile, and also examines the other end of the spectrum— literal and figurative concept of mask, contrary to a candid photograph. This exhibition is curated by Karen Hellman, assistant curator of photographs at the J. Paul Getty Museum. Save the date!
