Art As A Process Holton Rower
Staying loyal to the traditions of his iconic theme unveiled in Pour series, the artist’s new works emerge from the surface at VENUS LA.
VENUS, the gallery dedicated to curated exhibitions both historic and contemporary, proudly hosts new work by Holton Rower. The artist debuts in LA with Cutaways, an exhibition comprised of sculptures and wall-based works currently on view until February 24th.
Holton Rower, a New York-based artist has been exhibiting solo both in the U.S. and abroad, as well as taking part in numerous group exhibitions and publications. A grandson of an acclaimed modern sculptor Alexander Calder, Rower was born into a bohemian family of noted artistic legacy. With Cutaways, perhaps, there’s plenty to talk about a somewhat tribute to that legacy.
In Pour, Holton’s iconic series of works, he layered colors while they flew and weaved into a beautiful shape on the canvas. It was very much a product of its environment, and fascinating aspect is that not even the artist knew exactly how the final version would turn out. As if Pour invited the audience to discover the very process behind the creation of a piece.
With his most recent body of work, the process is similar, although their three-dimensionality amplifies the optical effect. Rower’s sculptures reveal the nearly geological strata of his layered paint, creating intricate optical patterns. As if for the audience Cutaways extends the invitation behind the scenes of art creation even further.
