Okwui Enwezor
In March, The Maker heard the outstanding speech by Okwui Enwezor at the Venice Biennale Press conference. He began his presentation with a passage from Walter Benjamin and a passage from Pasolini in the 56th Biennale. His approach as curator draws inspiration from the origin of the Biennale a hundred years ago, created in a moment of changes, migration, industrial revolution, and technology. His speech showcased his brilliant curatorial approach to the 56th Venice Biennale and his discourse was worthy enough for the United Nations.
Enwezor is the director of the Haus der Kunst in Munich, Germany. He also has the roles of adjunct curator at the International Center of Photography in New York and is a Joanne Cassulo Fellow at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. In 2013, Enwezor was appointed curator of the Venice Biennale 2015, making him the first African-born curator in the exhibition’s 120 year history.
