Vermeer’s masterpieces on view in Louvre until May 22nd.

Immediately after the opening in February, the Louvre exhibition of Vermeer was dubbed ‘the art show of the year’. This exhibition offers a unique chance to see together in one location a third of Johannes Vermeer’s most precious paintings. There are 36 known works by Vermeer—given such a limited output, it is extraordinary, that his worldwide celebrity continues on today. Perhaps, it is his touching portrayal of everyday life—he did not invent the genre, but developed an unmistakenly recognizable style.

Alongside Vermeer’s paintings, ‘Masters of Genre Paining’ are on display, a show, featuring more than 70 works by his 17th-century Dutch contemporaries.
