The History of Color Through Art Lapis Lazuli
Catch the final weeks of the first US solo museum show of Aslı Çavuşoğlu in New Museum.
Aslı Çavuşoğlu is not only fascinated by color: the artist’s practice is research-driven, examining objects, images, and cultural symbols that have endured over time. For the New Museum exhibition and residency, she takes blue as a starting point, with particular attention to lapis lazuli, This semi-precious stone which has been primarily procured from Afghan mines since the seventh century BC, was the first natural blue, that humans were able to find. Çavuşoğlu follows its travels to China, Africa, Europe, unveiling how it became a sacred symbol in Western painting.
On view until January 13th, The Place of Stone features Çavuşoğlu’s new body of work— wall fresco panels, showcasing information about lapis lazuli’s trade and distribution, as well as its cultural symbolism. The artist also recorded an audio guide for the exhibition, for you to dive into it completely.
