The 70th edition of Cannes Film Festival wrapped up. The talks about it, however, won’t fade out for weeks and weeks. When the discussion goes into an unknown territory, we’ve got you covered: here’s our cheat sheet with the Cannes Film Festival highlights.
This year’s Palme d’Or went to Swedish director Ruben Ostlund for an art world satire The Square. Robin Campillo walked away with a Grand Prix for his BPM (Beats Per Minute), and Sofia Coppola’s The Beguiled brought her the best director award. Diane Kruger earned the best actress for her role in Fatih Akin’s In the Fade, while Joaquin Phoenix’s performance in You Were Never Really Here brought him the best actor’s honors. Nicole Kidman, who appeared in four projects in this year’s official selection, got a special 70th anniversary award.

Cannes against Netflix was quite a scandalous happening: in the end, festival decided to keep Netflix-produced Okja in the competition, but in the future movies not meant for cinema screenings won’t be accepted.
There’s also a lingering opinion, that this year, ‘out of competition’ category overshadowed the main one: Lynch bringing the Twin Peaks, memorable screenings likeTesnota by Kantemir Balagov, Wind River by Taylor Sheridan, Directions by Stephan Komandarev enjoyed high regards. In addition, Alejandro González Iñárritu’s VR installation Carne y Arena sparked the thought about the scenarios of cinema’s future. There’s a lot to remember, besides main competition wins and best/worst red carpet looks.
